Belated Frugal Friday: Aldi

In my new-found motivation to blog more, I also thought of starting a "Frugal Friday" tradition. Today is obviously not Friday, but oh well. Doing the best I can. :)

Today's post is about one of my favorite stores - ALDI! While I can't do all of my grocery shopping here, simply because they don't have everything I need, they do have great prices for what they do have. Above is a picture of my most recent shopping trip:

1 seed starter
1 doz. plain bagels
1 doz. cinnamon raisin bagels
1 bag dried cranberries
1 box microwave popcorn
1 box go-gurt
4 frozen juices from concentrate (1 grape, 2 apple, 1 apple raspberry)
1 bunch bananas (5)
4 yogurts (2 blueberry, 2 whipped strawberry)
1 pack green pepper seeds

Not bad for no coupons. The best part of this trip was that bagels were on sale for $0.25 per 1/2 dozen! So I bought 4 and froze 3 of them. We should be set on bagels for a while. For those wondering about taste/quality of Aldi brands - the bagels, yogurt, popcorn, juice and go-gurt are all just as good as any other mid-grade brand. They're not the best I've ever had, but are certainly far from bad. I haven't personally had the go-gurt but M&L like it. They've had name-brand Go-Gurt as well and have not commented on any difference.

I'm planning on using the seed starter and seeds to try to grow my own green peppers, since that is the most expensive produce we currently buy - and organic ones can be hard to come by as they're not always at Whole Foods or Trader Joe's. Hoping my black thumb turns slightly greenish for this adventure? Or that my green-thumbed hubby will help me out a little. :) Will keep you posted.

  1. Peppers are pretty expensive. I need to think about planting my own. I would save lots of money if I grew my own onions, green peppers, and celery.

  2. yeah it's crazy how expensive organic peppers are! we've started going without them for some dishes ...
